i would rather go blind

i never like hearing about the death of a musician.  (i find the death list they run during the grammy's each year to be depressing.)  sadly though, my reasons are pretty selfish... if the departed is one of my contemporaries, it makes me sad that they died young - we miss out on any further greatness they had left.  if they are older yet an artist that i enjoy, it makes me sad that i wasn't around during their heyday.  and then there's the artists that would be on my figurative list - the ones i have this feeling that i would really dig if only i dedicated myself a little, but now it seems too late.

in honor of Etta James:

wait a minute Chester

not usually my favorite song from The Band - not that I don't like it but other more-favorited songs get in the way.  but this video has a few other love that push this song up: a good cover, collaborating artists, general fun.  so its in.

Some Army

this band comes straight off the music list i'm on. downloaded the digital version of their 7" and saw them live last week. they only have three songs out at the moment but they certainly have enough material for a full length.  Servant Ties is fantastic:

Nietzsche quote

recently got this off of a twitter feed i follow and deemed it appropriate as its music related...

“And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” -- Friedrich Nietzsche

a sound is a noise

a quote from Pearl S. Buck that talks to the musically and otherwise creative folks:

"The truly creative mind in any field is no more than this: A human creature born abnormally, inhumanely sensitive. To them... a touch is a blow, a sound is a noise, a misfortune is a tragedy, a joy is an ecstasy, a friend is a lover, a lover is a god, and failure is death. Add to this cruelly delicate organism the overpowering necessity to create, create, create -- so that without the creating of music or poetry or books or buildings or something of meaning, their very breath is cut off...They must create, must pour out creation. By some strange, unknown, inward urgency they are not really alive unless they are creating."

song memories

came across this blog post recently about the songs we listen to over and over, hundreds of times, until the song is imprinted in our heads with certain memories.  got me thinking about the songs I have worn out over the years:

(my non-exhaustive list):

Iron & Wine: Belated Promise Ring

Deer Tick: Easy

Nathaniel Rateliff: Smiling

The Grateful Dead: Peggy-O

Dave Matthews Band: Grace is Gone

Neko Case: Hold on Hold on

Grayson Capps: Lorraine's Song

not surprisingly, I've already posted about many of them.  always on the lookout for the next one.

but it takes so long

somehow i've run across this song three times in the last 48 hours - on spotify radio, as a link of a random blog i follow and then again during the credits of a tv show.

only seemed right to now post it here - basically to save it for future listening.
